Most jobs at HCLE are unpaid. You can be either a volunteer or an intern. We would love to pay you for your valuable work but that requires having money coming in. Our current (2015) sources of money are gifts and grants. You can help convert your unpaid job into one that offers a stipend or hourly compensation by making fund raising part of your position. Ask your volunteer manager how to do that.
Section 1: What needs doing at HCLE
Everything. HCLE is a new, huge project. We need people to:
do administrative tasks,
build our Virtual Museum online platform,
manage our collection and
create exhibits.
We customize each job to fit the skills of the applicant. Young people who have never worked before and adults who are not computer professionals can help us with:
scanning documents,
data entry,
searching the web and
testing our new web pages as they are built.
More experienced students, adults and seniors can:
design and implement web sites
create exhibits
do historical research
produce oral histories of Educational Technology Pioneers
curate and interpret our collection
write grant proposals
monitor our social media sites
manage others

Section 2: How to apply for a position
First, explore this wiki site. You will find it has grown organically over the last three years and needs lots of work. That said, it does provide a glimpse into what we are trying to do and how we have gone about it so far. If you are still interested after you have visited with us, send an email to jobs@hcle.org. Administrative Team
Volunteer Manager
This person will seek new volunteers and interns, keep track of teams and schedules, facilitate communication within and between teams, develop new positions, explore funding sources for internship stipends and conduct satisfaction surveys. Good communication skills via telephone and social media are required. Ability to work independently and stay organized a must as well as rapidly switching among varied tasks. No previous experience is required but candidate must enjoy negotiating and clarifying and be willing to ask supervisor for direction when confusion sets in.
Minimum Commitment: 6 hours/week for 10 weeks or 3 hours/week for 20 weeks
Relationship Wrangler
HCLE is a complex community with fluctuating roles undertaken by the same individual. This person will facilitate communication among staff, volunteers, board members, advisers, consultants and collaborating institutions. We are gearing up to use the open source platform, CiviCRM, to support interactions and track relevant data. The first assignment will be to help build out this online tool (Lots of thought but no programming required.) In the fullness of time this position will evolve into HR, Communications, Ombudsman and other, more conventional jobs. At the moment the Relationship Wrangler will be a jack-of-all-trades, reporting to Tom, the Project Manager and Liza, Vision Keeper.
Minimum Commitment: 6 hours/week for 10 weeks or 3 hours/week for 20 weeks
Outreach Team
This area is being developed. There will be opportunities in social media to keep the project in the public eye, to recruit volunteers and interns, to manage and track interactions. Duties will include:
monitoring Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, WordPress and other online sites,
assisting in recruitment of volunteers, interns, advisers, content specialists, collaborators
identifying and contacting key individuals in the virtual museum field
Catalog/Data Entry Team
Library and Information Science Adviser
Candidate should be currently studying or have experience in one or more of the following fields: Library and Information Science, Museum Studies, Digital Humanities. Position requires sufficient prior knowledge to guide design, implementation and operation of HCLEs collection catalog or be able to confer knowledgeably with outside professional and scholars to bring needed expertise in-house. Computer programming skill is helpful but not necessary although candidate will need to be able to specify requirements to programmers.
Minimum Commitment: 120 hours, must stay with the project for 6 months.
Copyright Technician
History of Computing in Learning and Education Virtual Museum is engaged in republishing relevant magazines, journals, newsletters, personal correspondence, conference presentations, even books on its website. Permissions are needed to make this material available to the public. Our copyright technician will attempt to secure these permissions from authors, creators, publishers or other copyright holders so that their existing copyrights are properly respected. Each physical item or digital document will be reviewed to identify the rights holder and make subsequent contact with permission request. Correspondence will be filed and final permissions linked to item record in the collection catalog. When appropriate, technician will explain Creative Commons copyright to the rights holder and encourage more open copyright status be applied to the work. Orphan and public domain works will be so noted. When republishing rights cannot be obtained technician will document where and how the item can be accessed through a library or commercial digital repository.
Qualifications:
1) Some library and information science experience (students ok),
2) ability to read and interpret legal documents,
3) tact in communicating with authors/creators,
4) excellent detail management and electronic filing skills,
5) willingness to collaborate with other team members,
6) independent, self-starting working style

Developed at the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media (RRCHNM) at George Mason University, Omeka has become a popular tool in the emerging field of Digital Humanities. Intern will
learn to modify the default Omeka interface to meet display needs of HCLE

Fundraising research assistant
Intern will work with the development team at the History of Computing in Learning and Education Virtual Museum to raise funds to underwrite the creation and operation of this online destination. Duties will include: identifying potential funders among corporations, professional organizations, private foundations and government agencies; analyzing and outlining details in requests for proposals; help in drafting applications; tracking status of submitted proposals. All work can be performed online. Meetings and 1-to-1 supervision will be by phone or online.

Metadata Team
Metadata Compiler
Under supervision of project director, intern will examine artifacts from the History of Computing in Learning and Education archive, enter items into the online database, research missing metadata, complete database metadata entries and scan or photograph each document or item. Metadata may include technical descriptions of software or equipment as well as author/creator information and copywriter status of documents. Also, intern will perform a comprehensive web search for each item to locate and document other sources of information about it. Work to be performed on site in Guerneville, CA, USA and on line.
Qualifications: 1) Curiosity about the history of learning and educational technology, 2) sufficient familiarity with old software and other media to understand specifications to record as metadata, 3) accurate typing and data entry review skills, 4) self-starting, independent work style, 5) willingness to ask for help when obstacles or questions arise.
Ontology researcher
The vocabulary used to describe educational materials is in a state of flux. Various organizations are proposing standards and no single set of metadata exists at the present time. Under supervision of project director, this intern will research current ontologies in use in the English speaking world and prepare a report. The result will include a suggested schema for metadata to be used by the History of Computing in Learning and Education Virtual Museum.
Qualifications: 1) Willingness to perform high quality, scholarly research both in libraries and online, 2) Strong writing skills, 3) Interest in education, the history and future of education, educational technology, and non-formal learning, 4) Good collaboration skills, 5) Desire to present results at conferences and publish in relevant journals.

Intern will review new content posted on a Wiki web site and edit as appropriate. Tasks: check for new postings daily, read all new postings, edit for English grammar, spelling and clarity as needed, move posts to existing page or add additional pages as needed, add navigation buttons to pages to facilitate navigation around wiki, grouping of related content and search for specific topics, improve page layout, edit superfluous code from HTML page source. All tasks can be done on line.

Web Designer 3: Gallery
Intern or volunteer will produce a proposed design for HCLE Gallery-style exhibits using Omeka or another open source platform. These exhibits will comprise collections of related images with explanatory text and "dig deeper" buttons leading to further information on the topic.
Web Designer 4: Game/Simulation/CAI Platform
Intern or volunteer will produce a proposed design for HCLE "Play-It-Again" Platform that permits visitors to use historic software in modern web browsers. Work will be done in consultation with Internet Archive which will host program source and emulation code. Platform must include data collection hooks that track keystroke-level interaction, collects biographical data and user responses to questions posed by researchers.
Web Designer 5: Virtual World Exhibit Platform (Holodeck)
Intern or volunteer will produce a proposed design for HCLE 3-D Exhibit halls. These cyber spaces will permit visitors to create custom avatars that can walk through the museum and interact with 3-D exhibits. Access to 2-D Galleries and "Play-It-Again" platform should be implemented.
